KEY AND PLATE CONTROL
Key Control
Were you aware that many, if
not most, thefts appear to be internal?
Sub-contractors, vendors, past and present employees all can
play a role in theft. Control
of vehicle keys is a crucial component of any dealership loss
control plan.
Keys
are kept in a locked cabinet out of public areas.
Never
leave keys in an unattended vehicle.
Lock
boxes can only be used as a sales convenience devise, NOT a
security devise. All
keys need to be removed on a nightly basis.
Keys
should not be left in showroom vehicles.
Limit
access to key code numbers and only authorized personnel can
request the parts department to replace keys.
Parts should also keep a record of whom asked and why
keys were requested.
Only
authorized employees can access keys.
Regularly
check key inventory, especially when an employee leaves.
Plate Control
Plates
represent the total financial assets of a dealership and must be
treated accordingly!
Plates must be
accounted for and surprise plate audits should be done on an
ongoing basis. |
Plates should either be
assigned to responsible individuals or a sign in and out
system should be utilized. |
Plates should never be
loaned to customers or employees for non-business purposes. |
Never keep more plates
on hand than necessary. |
