Test Drive Procedures

A salesperson must always go with the customer.

The salesperson must obtain a copy of the customer’s current driver’s license.

A photocopy of the license is left in a pre-designated area in the dealership.

Vehicles are never to be taken by a customer overnight.*

Dealership should establish a pre-planned test drive route using all right hand turns.**

The vehicle keys always stay with the salesperson, especially on a driving switchover.

The salesperson should always check the key returned at the end of the test drive, if the customer was the last to drive, and confirm that it belongs to the car driven.

Proper training on the procedures outlined above is provided to all sales and service personnel authorized to test drive vehicles.

*Although the individual desiring to take the vehicle over-night is a good citizen, we have experienced losses when once at the customer’s home someone else is allowed to use the vehicle.

**It has been statistically proven that the majority of test-drive accidents occur while taking a left-hand turn across traffic.
